Watain

Biography

Watain (1998-present): a Black Metal band from Uppsala, Sweden.

T

he band Watain originated in Uppsala, Sweden. After selecting the name from the title of a recording by the American black metal group Von, their first release was the 7" EP The Essence Of Black Purity on the Swedish label 'Grimrune Productions', recorded in Necromorbus Studios during 1999. The record company was brought to their attention from the demo release, Go Fuck Your Jewish "God", the year previous. The French black metal label 'Drakkar Productions' then offered Watain a deal for two full length albums; the live set Black metal Sacrifice (1999) and the debut album Rabid Death's Curse (2000) subsequently followed, the album featuring the membership of H. Jonsson (Real Name: Nils HÃ¥kan Jonsson; drums), P. Forsberg (Real Name: Pelle Martin Forsberg; guitars), E. Danielsson (Real Name: Karl Erik Stellan Danielsson; bass/vocals) and C. Blom (Real Name: Crippe Blom; guitars).

After the debut release, Watain toured and performed alongside bands such as Rotting Christ, Antaeus, Dark Funeral and Malign. Another live set, The Ritual Macabre (2000) and The Misanthropic Ceremonies (split 7" EP with Diabolicum; 2001) followed, along with two demos: Promo 2002 and Puzzlez Ov Flesh.

In 2003, Watain again entered the studio to record their second full-length album, Casus Luciferi now without C. Blom. The Stellar Dimension Infernal Tour through Europe followed, alongside Secrets of the Moon and Averse Sefira. They also toured throughout 18 countries with Dissection on their two month long Rebirth of Dissection tour in 2004.

Their third full-length album, Sworn to the Dark was released in Europe on February 21, 2007, followed by a Europe tour along with Celtic Frost, Kreator and Legion of the Damned.

Lawless Darkness (2010) would be the next opus, followed up with The Vinyl Reissues boxed set (2012) and The Wild Hunt (2013). A bunch of lives sets and another box in the form of Tonight We Raise Our Cups and Toast in Angels Blood: A Tribute to Bathory (2015; live), Stellar Descension Infernal in Budapest (2015; live) and Satanic Deathnoise from the Beyond - The First Four Albums boxed set (2015) would then follow before the release of Trident Wolf Eclipse (2018), The Agony And Ecstasy Of Watain (2022) and the live set Die in Fire - Live in Hell (2023).

Footnote: Watain are openly opposed to "NSBM", National Socialist Black Metal, a neo-Nazi styled underground movement that has infiltrated black metal over the past few years.
