Queens Of The Stone AgeBIOGRAPHYQueens Of The Stone Age (1996-present): a Heavy Metal band from Palm Desert, California, USA. Q uietly gaining in popularity ever since the bulk of the membership started Queens of the Stone Age after the break-up of Kyuss, and would grow to become one of the most influential bands in the stoner rock/heavy metal field. In the beginning, Queens of the Stone Age were a two-man band featuring former Kyuss men Josh Homme (guitar/vocals) and Nick Oliveri (bass) who originally started out by surrounding themselves by semi-permanent players and occasional guests, such as drummer Alfredo Hernandez (ex-Kyuss) for their 1998 debut Queens of the Stone Age. RatedR (2000), the follow-up, saw Dave Catchings (guitar/vocals), Gene Trautmann (drums) and Nick Lucero (drums) join. Guest vocalist Mark Lanegan (ex-Screaming Trees) would join as a full time member when the work was completed. During the 2001 Rock in Rio show, bassist Nick Oliveri would be arrested after performing on stage naked; only his bass guitar covered his lower front. He would later apologize to officials, saying he did not know it was a crime in Brazil. Of further note that year, after their performance at the Rock am Ring festival in Germany, the band was so upset withe the performance the members all tattooed themselves with the show's starting time "Freitag 4:15". Songs for the Deaf proved to be a serious hit, being certified gold in 2003, their only to win certification, with sales of over 900,000; No One Knows and Go with the Flow being the hits on radio and MTV. You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire and A Song For The Dead were the tracks featured as the theme song in Naughty Dog's Jak X: Combat Racing (2005). In February of 2004 there would be an upheaval of sorts with Mark Lanegan leaving and Nick Oliveri being fired by Homme on personal reasons. Alain Johannes (bass/vocals/guitar) would then join for the release Lullabies to Paralyze (2005), a title taken from a lyric on Mosquito Song, a track on the previous album. The album most notably also featured guest Billy Gibbons (of-ZZ Top). The live album/DVD set, Over the Years and Through the Woods (2005) would follow. The set would feature a live concert filmed in London, England, and bonus features including rare videos of songs from 1998 to 2005. Era Vulgaris would follow in 2007. November of that year saw Queens of the Stone Age performing a semi-acoustic set in an underground salt mine in Germany featuring hits, rarities, covers and an unreleased song named Cathedral City. On July 2, 2008, former keyboardist Natasha Shneider died of lung cancer at the age of 52. After a tribute concert the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles on August 16, 2008 and a support tour for the Era Vulgaris album, the band took a break. During the band's 2009 and 2010 downtime, the band members worked on side projects. Troy Van Leeuwen started up Sweethead. Joey Castillo performed with Eagles of Death Metal for their Heart On tour. Michael Shuman (bass) resumed his work as a drummer and vocalist with Mini Mansions. Dean Fertita became the guitarist/keyboardist for The Dead Weather. In the case of Josh Homme, he formed supergroup Them Crooked Vultures with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones. The band would release a two-CD deluxe edition of Rated R (2010); this edition featured the original of the CD along with six B-sides and live recordings from the band's Reading performance in 2000. In 2010, Homme suffered from complications of knee surgery, whereby his heart stopped for a short time due to asphyxiation. Doctors used a defibrillator to revive him leaving him bedridden for four months. Upon his recovery, Queens of the Stone Age released a remastered version of their self-titled debut album in early 2011. They then performed the album in its entirety on a promotional tour. Late 2011 would see the departure of Joey Castillo. Debuting at 1, the self-produced ...Like Clockwork would arrive in 2013. It would be the first Queens of the Stone Age album to feature full contributions from bassist Michael Shuman and keyboardist/guitarist Dean Fertita. Jon Theodore (drums/percussion/samplers) would also join the band. The band then took another hiatus; the members returned to working on various other projects. Josh Homme and Dean Fertita would contribute to Iggy Pop's Post Pop Depression (2016) and subsequent tour, while Troy van Leeuwen joined the supergroup Gone Is Gone. When the band regrouped, Villians would be the result August 25, 2017. The teaser trailer for the album was a comedy skit featuring the band performing a polygraph test with Liam Lynch along with an appearance of the album's producer Mark Ronson. Despite the amusing launch, it would be several years before the band returned again, this time with In Times New Roman ... in 2023. Read Less... ⏫
