Hagalaz Runedance

Biography

(AISE: Redirected from Nebelhexe)

Hagalaz Runedance (1996-2002, 2003-2011): a Folk Metal band from Kongsberg, Viken, Norway.

A

ndrea 'Nebel' Haugen explored the spirituality of ancient northern Europe, searching for the forgotten wisdom and values of her pagan ancestors through her music, lyrics and writings. She focused particularly on the feminine mysteries of the North and the strong position women held in pagan cultures. He work was mostly performed playing all instruments with various guest musicians helping out.

In 1996, Haugen started Hagalaz' Runedance. The music has been described as "Ambient Folk" or "Pagan Folk". Working with a variety of musicians from the medieval, folk and so-called "alternative" music scenes, experimenting with traditional instruments and her voice to experience her visions, dreams and Seidr trances (Northern Shamanism). She describes Hagalaz as the rune to unlock the doors to the hidden self and it represents the mysterious side of femininity. Thus, to Andrea, Hagalaz' Runedance symbolizes the dance in-between the worlds.

In 1996 she released a single under the name Hagalaz' Runedance called When the Trees Were Silenced, followed a 1998's album titled The Winds that Sang of Midgard's Fate. The following year, the EP entitled Urd - That Which Was followed, with Volven arriving in 2000. The dreamscape continued in 2002 with the release of the Frigga's Web album, featuring two musicians from the medieval music scene on bag-pipes, lyre, harp, hurdy gurdy and recorders. (Frigga's Web would later be re-issued in 2004).

Andrea (a German, who lived in England before moving to Norway in 1994) had previously made a name for herself in 1994 with the obscure musical project Aghast. Her articles and ideas expressed in interviews became quite respected in the Alternative music scene and she has been an inspiration for many young individuals. Many of her letters to the media have also been printed in the biggest Norwegian tabloid papers and magazines.

In 2000, she published a book titled The Ancient Fires of Midgard discussing topics such as Northern mythology and the pagan way of life, Nature's mysteries, ancient traditions, the magic of the wise women, natural childbirth and the animal spirit.

In 2003 Andrea decided to continue her musical journey under her own name, "Nebel", in 2003, no longer under the name of Hagalaz' Runedance; thus the next release would come under the name Nebelhexë. This is because she chose to explore different routes of artistic freedom in her musical expressions, focusing on herself as a person rather than a concept.

Besides her music, Andrea performed show-fights with a Viking re-enactment group (much in the style of what we in North America call SCA (Society For Creative Anachronisms) who re-enact the classic medieval England period, and has Seidr magic gatherings/workshops (to name but a few of her pagan activities). She's has also been a member of Norway's registered Ã...satru community Bifrost. She also supports the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), has a great passion for horses and dogs and her daughter. In 2011 she's re-open shop as just Andrea Nebel.
