Pagan Altar

Pagan Altar (1982-present) is a NWOBHM band from London, UK.

T

he NWOBHM movement of the late seventies and early eighties spawned a few classic bands, but most dissappeared into the catalog of time. Then there is Pagan Altar, a band who seemed to be talked about at the time yet never became well known, a band who went barely noticed when they completed their 1982 debut Volume 1 with the membership of Alan Jones (guitarvocals), Trevor Portch (bass) and John Mizrahi (drums), all members that are still with the band to this day. It is a wonder why this band never got big, perhaps the stars weren't aligned right. Put simply, Pagan Altar plays doom-influenced classic NWOBHM, a style that strangely wasn't com mon at the time for by now the likes of Iron Maiden had injected punk into the mix and sped up the sound. Pagan Altar also boasted unique vocals (likened by many to a young Bon Scott, if he sang doom). Exactly what happened to the band since those days isn't quite clear and even the official website doesn't offer much insight other than to say the original album has been since re-released. Finally, after twenty-two years, the recording of their followup, The Lords Of Hypocrisy, would arrive in 2004 with Mark Elliot taking over Drums and Terry Jones on Vocals (Alan Jones doing back up vocals and guitar). The EP The Time Lord would follow, not sure if it has any relation to the British Sci-Fi Dr. Who.
