Autopsy

Biography/History

(AISE: Redirected from Ravenous)

Autopsy (1987-1995, 2008, 2009-present): a Death Metal band from Oakland, California, USA.

O

riginally featuring Chris Reifert (ex-Death; vocals/drums) who had formerly played on Death's seminal debut album Scream Bloddy Gore, and joining with Danny Coralles (guitar) and Eric Cutler (guitar) he launched his own early death metal band boasting blood, guts and gore. They were subsequently picked up by 'Peaceville' to issue their debut album Severed Survival (1989), issued in the UK/Europe only. The following year Ken Sovari replaced Steve DiGiorgio, and Eric Cutler in turn was then replaced by his brother Steve Cutler for the release of Mental Funeral (1991) before DiGeorgio returned for Fiend For Blood (1992) before leaving again and permanently being replaced by Josh Barohn (ex-Suffocation) for the follow-up Acts Of The Unspeakable (1992).

By this time, however, the act was meeting with resistance from various customs authorities, most notably those in Australia, who took objection to the gory cover art. That along with another line-up change featuring Reifert being joined by guests Freeway Migliore (ex-Immortal Hate; bass) and Chris Bower (ex-Hexx; guitar) they would finally release their final effort Shitfun (1995) after which Reifert, Bower and Freeway Migliore would join with Danny Corallis (bass/guitar/vocals) for the equally unpleasant outfit Abscess.

Under Abscessthey would produce an ample supply of gutter crawling gore in the form of several demos like Raw, Sick And Brutal Noize, Crawled Up From The Sewer, etc. to finally release Urine Junkies (1995), an album featuring many of these tracks among its numbers. New piles of vile came forth on the follow-up Seminal Vampires And Maggot Man (1997) and Tormented (2001) with Joe Allen replacing Freeway.

Reifert, Coralles and Bower were restless souls, however, for under the collective name Ravenous, and adding Killjoy (ex-Viking Crown/ex-Necrophagia; vocals) and Danny Lilker (ex-Anthrax/ex-Stormtroopers of Death (S.O.D.)/ex-Brutal Truth/ex-Holy Moses/ex-Nuclear Assault; bass) they would release Assembled In Blasphemy (2000) and Three On A Meathook EP (2002) boasting, as one would expect, a death metal gore fest to the highest order.

In 2010, the band returned with the EP The Tomb Within and the Macabre Eternal (2011) album (2011), The Headless Ritual (2013), Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves (2014), along with the EP pair Skull Grinder (2015) and Puncturing the Grotesque (2017) featuring Eric Cutler on guitar along side the returning Coralles.
