Green River

Biography

Green River (1984-1988, 1993, 2008-2009, 2018): a Grunge band from Seattle, Washington, USA.

F

ormed in 1984 by Mark Arm (vocals/guitar), Steve Turner (guitar), Alex Vincent (drums) and Jeff Ament (bass), Green River would see guitarist Stone Gossard joining later to allow Arm to concentrate on singing.

Vincent, Turner and Gossard (as well as future Presidents of the United States of America drummer Jason Finn) attended the Northwest School together in Seattle. Prior to joining Green River, each member had played with punk and hardcore groups. Arm and Turner had played together in both Mr Epp & The Calculations and the Limp Richerds. Turner had also performed with Vincent in Spluii Numa, and Gossard in March of Crimes and The Ducky Boys.

In early 1984, Vincent, Turner and Arm decided to form a new band. They asked Ament to join after his band at the time, Deranged Diction, had broken up. They called the band Green River, taking their name from the Green River Killer, a serial killer who was infamous in Washington state. Gossard joined shortly thereafter.

Over the course of their career, Green River released Rehab Doll (1988) along with the live Live At The Tropicana (2019), the compilation Dry as a Bone/Rehab Doll (1990) and the EP Come On Down (1985) and Dry As a Bone (1987) on the 'Sub Pop' label. Several attempted reformations would ensue with Gossard joining Pearl Jam.
