Obscura

Biography

Obscura (2002-present): a Death Metal band from Landshut, Germany.

F

ounded in 2002 Obscura was started by vocalist and guitarist Steffen Kummerer, drummer Jonas Baumgartl, bassist Martin Ketzer and guitarist Armin Seitz. The band was named after the Gorguts album Obscura. The act made its debut in 2006 with the self-released debut album Retribution and toured alongside Suffocation. A European headlining tour through East and South Europe followed in 2007. Later that year, drummer Hannes Grossmann (ex-Necrophagist) and bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling (Pestilence) were added as new permanent members. The group's latest addition, guitarist Christian Muenzner (ex- Necrophagist) joined in 2008. In September 2008 Obscura signed with 'Relapse Records' and released its second full-length album Cosmogenesis in early 2009. The band started their first-ever North American tour as part of the 'Cosmogenesis Worldtour' in April 2009 alongside Cannibal Corpse. Within one year the band played more than 160 shows all over the world as support for Atheist, The Black Dahlia Murder and Cannibal Corpse, not to mention hosting their first headliner tour in the USA, and their Japanese tour in support of Nile and Triptykon in 2010.

Obscura released the follow-up Omnivium, on March 29, 2011. On July 6th of that same year, bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling announced that he would leave the band due to conflicting schedules. The departure was somewhat controversial, with Steffen Kummerer stating in an interview that the band had fired Thesseling due to Thesselings cancellation of all tours, single shows and other activities with the band while confirming a South American & European tour among other festivals with the band Pestilence; in short - a conflict of interest. The replacement bassist for all shows supporting Omnivium was Linus Klausenitzer of Noneuclid, who filled in on recent tours for Thesseling.

After this dustup, the band started the 'Omnivium Worldtour' in their home town Landshut, Germany followed by a full European tour alongside Hate Eternal, Beneath the Massacre & Defiled. In June & July the same year they played a major market tour supporting Children of Bodom & Devin Townsend within North America. On the 10th of August the band announced their first South East Asian headlining tour, performing first time ever in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapur & United Arab Emirates now with the membership of: Steffen Kummerer (guitars & vocals), Christian Münzner (guitars), Hannes Grossmann (drums) and Linus Klausenitzer (bass). This line-up would not last for 2014 saw Münzner leave due to creative differences and his inability to tour as a result of his focal dystonia muscle spasms. Soon after, Grossmann left citing his own interests in forming a new bandguitarist Tom Geldschläger and fusion drummer Sebastian Lanser would take their places. More changes came in 2015 when Munich guitar Institute graduate Rafael Trujillo took over as their new lead guitarist, replacing Geldschläger who was released from his duties by Kummerer in July of that year.

After the release of Akróasis (2016) and Diluvium (2018), the membership would be released, leaving only Kummerer and Jeroen Paul Thesseling.

For A Valediction (2021), Kummerer was the only remaining original member who was joined by Christian Münzner (guitars), Jeroen Paul Thesseling (bass) and David Diepold (drums). A Celebration I - Live In North America, a live set, would follow in 2023.
