Fear Factory (1989-2002, 2003-2006, 2009-present): a Industrial Metal band from Los Angeles, California, USA.
he band that would become Fear Factory was founded by Burton C. Bell (vocals), Dino Cazares (guitar), Andrew Shives (bass) and Raymond Herrera (drums) in 1989 under the name Ulceration before changing it to Fear Factory in 1990. The band made two Bill Gould (of Faith No More) produced tracks for the compilation album L.A. Death metal before being called on by 'Roadrunner'.
Colin Richardson stepped in to produce their debut Soul Of A New Machine (1992). The album launched a whole new era of techno-dance beats and Industrial sounds (their album titles emphasized this part of the music) into death metal. After some live work with Biohazard and Sick Of It All, they joined forces with the Canadian outfit Front Line Assembly, who remixed their debut in the NIN style and re-titled it Fear Is The Mindkiller (1993). Demanufacture (1995) made them the kings of the techno/Industrial Death style. It focused on the darker side of the human thought processes and furthered their obsession with technology. The record made 27 in the UK, but failed to make it in the top 100 in the US, despite its massive appeal.

The follow-up, Remanufacture (Cloning Technology) (1997), added a funky and rhythmic feel from Junkie XL and DJ Dano, it went even farther up the UK charts and blurred the line between carbon and silicon generated music. Two EPs came out in 1997, but nothing came to note until the rumblings of Obsolete (1998) and Digimortal in 2001, more Hardcore inspired efforts.
Perhaps there was a shortage of work or the union went on strike, but whatever the reasons the members couldn't get along and Fear Factory called it quits when Bell left in March 2002. As predicted the record label released their very first 1991 recording, Concrete, posthumously later that same year.
Their departure wasn't to last, however, and under the membership of Burton C. Bell (vocals), Christian Olde Wolbers (guitar), Raymond Herrera (drums) would restart the machinery in 2003 with Hatefiles, and followed with Archetype (2004) with new bassist Byron Stroud (ex-Strapping Young Lad), an album that resurrected some of the aspects of old Fear Factory, while still working on the Brujeria operation.
Transgression (2005), Live on the Sunset Strip EP (2005), 15 Years of Fear Tour EP (2006) and the The Best of Fear Factory compilation (2006) would follow.
Mechanized (2010) would see the band shrink to a three-piece under the direction of Bell along with Dino Cazares (guitars/bass) and Gene Hoglan (drums). But only Cazares (who now also assumed drums in the form of programming a drum machine) and Bell would remain for The Industrialist (2012).
After the The Complete Roadrunner Collection 1992-2001 boxed set (2012) was released, Genexus (2015) and Linchpin compilation (2019) would follow with Mike Heller assuming the drums.
Bill Gould, Cazeres with Bell would deny it, but were most likely the mystery musicians (and not a bunch of drug lords) behind Brujeria, a pseudo Mexican mock death metal side act, who have thus far released four albums, Matando Gueros (1993), Raza Odlada (1995), Marijuana (1999; featuring the title track Marijuana - a remake of Macarena), Brujerizmo (2000) and Mextremist! Greatest Hits (2001) "Best Of..." compilation. The mostly side project featured Juan Brujo (vocals), Dino Cazares(a.k.a. Asesino; ex-Fear Factory/ex-Asesino; guitar), Pat Hoed(a.k.a. Fantasma; bass), Shane Embury(a.k.a. Hongo; ex-Napalm Death/ex-Lock Up; bass), Pinche Peach (bass/vocals) and Nick Barker(a.k.a. Hongo Jr.; ex-Dimmu Borgir/ex-Lock Up/ex-Cradle Of Filth/ex-Old Man's Child; drums) with original members Billy Gould(a.k.a. Guero Sin Fe; ex-Faith No More; bass/guitar) and Raymond Herrera (a.k.a. Greñudo; ex-Fear Factory/ex-Asesino; drums) left.
After the Linchpin compilation in 2019, Aggression Continuum (2021) would follow.
