Trespass

Biography

Trespass (1978-1982, 1992-1993, 2015-present): a NWOBHM band from Sudbury, UK.

B

ritish band Trespass hail from Sudbury, Suffolk, England and were a part of the NWOBHM movement at the beginning of the 1980s, along side bands like Saxon and Iron Maiden to name just two. Initially the band consisted of brothers Mark Sutcliffe (vocals/guitar) and Paul Sutcliffe (drums), along with Dave Crawte (guitar) and Richard Penny (bass). Later they replaced Penny with Cris Linscott and added vocalist Steve "Sleeve" Mills, all under 21 at the time. They all had day jobs, as the band never became financially viable: "Sleeve" was employed by the Social Security Dapartment, Mark and Paul worked at a factory, Dave worked at a record shop, and Cris was an income tax collector.

When the band signed with 'Trial Records', their first single, One of These Days, had a pressing of only 2000 copies, but sold out quickly. After that they enlisted vocalist Rob Eckland for their Jealousy/Live It Up single; a double A-side. The final release for the label was the Bright Lights EP featuring Bob Irving on bass. The release also had a limited pressing of 2000 copies, and a strange quirk whereby the A-side ran at 45 RPM but the B-side ran at 33.3 RPM! But due to a family tragedy, and that the band really wasn't making a go of it, they disbanded soon after.

In 1990, Lars Ulrich, the drummer and co-founder of Metallica, a band cited to be influenced by NWOBHM, released a compilation entitled NWOBHM '79 Revisited celebrating the tenth anniversary of NWOBHM. The double-CD included some of the top acts of the time, with Trespass being represented with their biggest hit One of These Days from a BBC session.

After the 1992 compilation, The Works, featuring their previous recordings, Leo Smee took bass after the Sutcliffe brothers decided to take another stab at the band, resulting in their first studio full-length of Head (1993), before the band split again. Posthumously the NWOBHM 20th Anniversary Festival - Metal Crusade '99 (1999) split with Samson, Tank and Praying Mantis, The Works II compilation (2000) and One of These Days: The Trespass Anthology compilation (2004) would follow; the '...Anthology' recording featuring tracks from a demo recorded way back in 1982 when the band were represented for a brief period by Lester Mortimer, the manager for British pomp rock band The Enid. Lead vocalist Adrian Grimes (a.k.a. Adrian Lynden) joined them for the recording of a six-track demo, produced by Steven Stewart at The Enid's The Lodge Recording Studio.

The ever-revolving bass role was now assigned to Ed Neal for the self-titled effort in 2015 on a new reformation attempt, but this was a temporary measure to fill a missing position to complete the work as most of the material had already been recorded in 2013-2014 during pre-reformation sessions when they entered the studio once more to re-record their classic material, so it had a consistent sound and feel with the original members, but the membership went on to pursue other careers, leaving a whole new line-up needed in place for the follow-up, Footprints in the Rock (2018), now featuring Mark Sutcliffe (vocals/guitars), Danny Biggin (bass), Jason Roberts (drums) and Joe Fawcett (guitars).

Once again the bass position had to be filled, however, now with Wil Wilmot for Wolf at the Door (2018).
