Jackyl

Biography/History

Jackyl (1990-present): a Heavy Metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

G

uitarist Jessie James Dupree was the front man of this Atlanta, Georgia outfit with fellow members Jeff Worley (guitar), Jimmy Stiff (guitar), Tom Bettini (bass) and Chris Worley (drummer; brother of Jeff Worley). Using a basic AC/DC raunchy hard rock style with a heavy tour schedule, 'Geffen Records' saw a seller and quickly signed them up. Right from the start they courted controversy by striking a bad note with feminists from the song titled She Loves My Cock (to appear on their debut), coupled with their on-stage antics and they kept the media busy. One such antic was during The Lumber Jack track where Dupree would perform with a chainsaw, he and it, singing. His father was so impressed by the performance on the hired saw; he bought his son a new one. Dupree was also known to play part of the set naked, a stunt that lost them a supporting slot with Lynyrd Skynyrd; later shows with Damn Yankees and Aerosmith were more successful. During the time of grunge, the market was ripe for the likes of Jackyl, for their 1992 self-titled debut gave them platinum. Their second outing, Push Comes To Shove (1994), continued right along in the same status and style. But Dupree just couldn't let it ride quietly, and an ad for the record was subsequently censored because Dupree was displaying his bare buttocks.

After two great records, however, they suddenly went silent and had thought to gone extinct until Night Of The Living Dead emerged in 1996. Cut The Crap (1997) and Stayin' Alive (1998) received much less notice but served to tell the world that they, indeed, were still around.

Less than a month after the events of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Jackyl recorded and released "Open Invitation", which received wide airplay and featured lyrics that included, "I hate you bin Laden" and "You've got an open invitation to kiss our ass." The song mixed in clips from George C. Scott's portrayal of George S. Patton giving a speech to his soldiers in the movie Patton and President George W. Bush reading from the Bible's Shepherd's Psalm Psalm 23:4.

In 2002, Jackyl released Relentless. The following year, a second greatest hits compilation was produced entitled 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Jackyl.

In 2010, the band released When Moonshine and Dynamite Collide, releasing several singles and music videos to promote it.

For the first time ever, in honor of Father's Day, Jackyl and Nigel Dupree Band (the latter fronted by vocalist Nigel Thomas Dupree, son of Dupree) are releasing their studio albums simultaneously. Best in Show and Up to No Good (the latter being the 2012 album from the Nigel Dupree Band). Rowyco (2016) and 30 Coming In Hot (2022) would follow.
