amed after an ancient city located in Egypt, now known as Akhmim, Khemmis is an American doom metal band from Denver, Colorado, that formed in 2012 after guitarist Ben Hutcherson moved to Colorado to pursue a doctorate at the University of Colorado. The band's music combines doom metal and traditional heavy metal with elements of death metal and black metal. After the release of their debut EP, Khemmis (2013) under the membership of Daniel Beiers (bass), Ben Hutcherson (vocals/guitars) and Phil Pendergast (vocals/guitars), the band released their first two studio albums, Absolution (2015) and Hunted (2016) with Zach Coleman on drums through independent label 20 'Buck Spin'.
Desolation (2018), Doomed Heavy Metal EP (2020) , a collection of rarities, live tracks, and a newly-recorded cover of Dio's Rainbow in the Dark, followed, co-released by '20 Buck Spin' and 'Nuclear Blast' jointly in separate territories. More Songs About Death Vol. 1 EP (2020), however, saw the band switch to 'Nuclear Blast' full time.

In 2020, they released a cover of Down in a Hole by Alice in Chains as part of 'Magnetic Eye Records' Dirt (Redux).
With Deceiver (2021) and Where the Cold Wind Blows EP (2023) the band was returned to the original three-some.
