Xero

Biography

Xero (1976-1984): a NWOBHM band from London, UK.

T

his band got more notoriety for more than what they should have done then what they actually did. Before releasing their only EP, Cutting Loose (1984), featuring the membership of Moon Williams (vocals), Bill Liesegang (guitars), Boon Gould (bass; R.I.P. 2019) and Barry Fitzgerald (drums), Xero would release the single Oh Baby (1983)... and it is here where the trouble started because on the flip side was a track called Lone Wolf featuring Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, Samson, The Shots and Speed on vocals. Problem is, Dickinson's C.V. does not include him as a member of Xero. It's actually a song recorded by The Shots featuring Dickinson, and Xero had no authorization to use it. What's more, the manager ordered a guitar solo from Xero's legitimate A-side track Oh Baby to make it appeal more to the pop market than heavy metal. The single did make it to the charts (at 30), but Rod Smallwood (Iron Maiden's co-manager) made them withdraw the single from the market due to the B-side. Lone Wolf was also featured on Xero's aforementioned only EP; it is unknown if this is the same track in question or another song with the same badge.
