Arandu Arakuaa (2008-present): a Folk Metal band from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
he band's name translates in Tupi Guarani (or just "Tupi" for short) to "wisdom of the cosmos", and Arandu Arakuaa are the only contemporary band to sing in that language. The band combines traditional heavy metal sounds with indigenous Brazilian stylings using flutes, foot rattles, and other instruments. The two singers present lyrics completely in Tupi Guarani, an ancient language spoken by tribes throughout Brazil. Unlike Sepultura before this band incorprates native stylings full-time. to become known as the first folk metal band in Brazil.
The band was founded in 2008 by instrumentalist and vocalist Zândhio Huku. From the beginning, the group sought to combine heavy metal with Brazilian indigenous and regional music, making use of the languages of indigenous peoples. The lyrics cover the struggles of those peoples.
One of the biggest challenges for Arandu Arakuaa fans is understanding the lyrics. Most translation websites do not include Tupi, and few people speak it. To solve the problem, the band has included Portuguese subtitles in their video clips on YouTube.
Under the membership of Zândhio Huku (guitars/vocals/viola caipira/indigenous instruments), Guilherme Cezario (guitars, vocals), Andressa Barbosa (bass, vocals) and João Mancha (drums, percussion) Arandu Arakuaa would release Arandu Arakuaa (2012) EP, Kó Yby Oré (2013), Wdê Nnãkrda (2015) and Mrã Waze (2018).
