R obert John Arthur Halford (born 25 August 1951; vocals) is an English singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist for Judas Priest and noted for his powerful, wide-ranging voice and trademark leather-and-studs image. He has never published as a solo album, but has engaged in other collaborative side-projects in the form of Fight, 2wo and Halford. Born at Sutton Coldfield, in the UK, he grew up in nearby Walsall. His early influences included Little Richard, Janis Joplin and Robert Plant. In early 2008, Halford expressed a desire in making a black metal album, citing encouragement from former Emperor front-man Ihsahn which never panned-out. Halford has also provided voice-over for the characters General Lionwhyte and the leader of the Fire Barons on the 2009 video game BrĂ¼tal Legend with 'The Baron's' appearance and personality based on Halford. Halford also made an appearance in the 2002 film Spun where he played a retail clerk at a sex shop. Read All... ⏬ Besides his music, Halford is equally best known for being the musician who broke open the closet door to the LGBQ+ community when in 1998 he publicly revealed his homosexuality on MTV. He broke down in tears saying, "It's a wonderful moment when you walk out of the closet. Now I've done that and I've freed myself." He became an outspoken advocate of LGBQ+ rights since. His music and lyrical content did not change after his coming out, nor did his popularity. He paved the way for the heavy metal community to come around to accepting LGBQ+ among its community.
