he concept that would become Iffy was realized in their own Candyslippers studio by Kirk Johnson (vocals), Tom Merkl (bass), Dave Pederson (guitar/keyboards) and Kraig Johnson (guitar/vocals; brother to Kirk, and member of the Jayhawks and Golden Smog). Swapping files between Minneapolis and Merkl's adopted Amsterdam home, their debut album, Biota Bondo (2001), would eventually be completed, along with the Can-O-Cope EP that same year. Kirk, also a painter and sculptor, wanted an outlet by which him and fellow members could express their creativity with the lived-in feeling of the old school retro sounds. Computers assisted much of their debut. Peter Anderson would join on drums before the album's completion. The album was distributed by major label 'WEA'.
