Black Majesty

Biography/History

Black Majesty (2001-present): a Power Metal band from Melbourne, Australia.

P

laying melodic heavy metal, Black Majesty started up in 2001. Hailing from Melbourne Australia, the same part of the world that had already spawned the heavy metal likes of Destroyer 666, Vanishing Point, Damaged and Pegazus, the Black Majesty line-up was playing a style they describe as melodic heavy metal with much owed to British acts like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and German favorites like Helloween and Blind Guardian, then textured it all from an appreciation of bands like the US based Dream Theater and early Queensryche.

With a host of positive responses, Black Majesty would shop for a label while taking opportunities on Best Unsigned Band compilation CDs which garnered further fan and industry responses. The wave only got bigger for the band when they were awarded Best New Metal Band by the Australian webzine Full Strength!

Priding themselves on their live show Black Majesty, in a relatively short space of time, had won the appreciation of many who have seen and heard the band. Under the membership of Hanny Mohamed (of Pegazuz; keyboards/guitar), Stevie Janevski (ex-Cyclone Tracy; guitar/back vocals), John "Gio" Cavaliere (vocals) and Czech drummer Pavel Konvalinka (ex-Kryptor/ex-Leprocide; drums) they would release Sands Of Time (2002) as a promo. By the time they got signed to German 'LMP' label to release their debut album of the same title in 2003, Mark Kelson (ex-Cryptal Darkness) joined on bass to replace Joe Fata (who in turn had replaced original bassist (and a founding member) Cory Betts).

The membership would change with Mark Kelson (bass (2003-2004)), Evan Harris (bass (?-2015)), Richard Filák (bass), Richard Evensand (drums (2012-?)), Ben Wignall (drums (2014-2015)), Evan Harris (bass (2015-)) and Ben Wignall (drums (2015-present)) to release Silent Company (2005), Tomorrowland (2007), In Your Honour (2010), Stargazer (2012), Cross of Thorns (2015) and Children of the Abyss (2018).

Footnote: The Melbourne heavy metal scene is such that many unions and connections have reciprocated with 'Gio' guessing on the opening track Surreal from Vanishing Point's Tangled in Dream album, (also becoming a regular guest to their live stage to sing the tune with VP singer Sylvio Massaro) most recently guessing on the Australian Edguy tour. His cousin Danny Cecati (formerly lead vocalist of Pegazus current vocalist in Eyefear) guessed with Black Majesty with a dual vocal performance from the two singers on the Sands of Time track Guardian.
