Martyr (1994-2012): a Death Metal band from Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada.
artyr was created in 1994 by brothers François Mongrain (bass/vocals) and Daniel Mongrain (guitar/vocals), and Stephane Belanger (drums), and in September 1995 their promotional tape, Ostrogoth, arrived. In May 1997, Francois Richard had replaced Belanger on drums and they began the production of their debut album, Hopeless Hopes, an album that arrived later that same year, and in September of that year, drummer Patrice Hamelin joined the band after François Richard's departure. Pier-Luc Lampron followed his leaving in January of 2002 who in turn left to study philosophy at University; Martin Carbonneau would be recruited to replace him.
Luc Lemay (of Gorguts) stepped in on guest vocals for the follow-up release Warp Zone on 'Sekhmet Records' in 2002, but later the same year they switched to Quebec's heavy metal label 'Skyscraper Music' for the release of Extracting The Core, a live effort featuring Francois Richard on the drums from back when he was in the band. The act was relatively quiet until Feeding the Abscess (2006) arrived. While still with Martyr, Daniel Mongrain would join Voivod in 2008, under the nickname "Chewy". Due to differences between the members, the act went on hiatus in 2012 to eventually split up sometime after.
