uite rightfully Crash Kelly states that there was a magical time in music where one could turn on their favorite FM radio station and be rewarded for their efforts with a stream of truly classic rock 'N' Roll to the sounds of T-Rex melding into Thin Lizzy, or Alice Cooper playing back to back against Cheap Trick. Indeed, as they also rightfully said, the 1970s era of rock 'N' Roll (and indeed up until recently) was a time when the purchase of an album was a sacred rite of passage, the attending of a concert the equivalent of a mass religious experience, and the image and art of the rock 'N' Roll performer married as one, and Crash Kelly desired to take the listener back.
Crash Kelly was the soul child of Sean Kelly, a young Toronto session musician who had toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in Canadian music. After years of playing sideman to other bands, he would start his own act in 2002. Weaned on the classic styles of Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, KISS, T-Rex and others through his older sister's record collection, Kelly quickly fell under the spell of the sound of twin guitars, slamming Glam-Rock beats and performance.
Being a child of the 80's, Kelly carefully selected hard rock artists of the famed Sunset Strip style. Early Motley Crue and Hanoi Rocks were considered essential listening, and the combination of those influences filtered through the strong styles of the aforementioned 1970s influences to form the foundation for Crash Kelly.
Their debut album, Penny Pills was co-produced by Kelly and "Killer" Ky Anto, of Robin Black And The Intergalactic Rockstars fame. Ky's production, expertise, on their debut production resulted in an album that honestly represented the spirit of hook filled, swaggering rock 'N' Roll and proved to be a fresh sound in an era infiltrated against the sounds of the nu-metal then sweeping the nation. Back in Canada, Crash Kelly would be augmented by members of several other Canuck bands as diverse as Robin Black And The Intergalactic rock Stars to Moist, Lowest Of The Low and Melvin including Sean Kelly (vocals/guitar), Ky Anto (guitar; part time), Allister Thompson (guitar/backing vocals), Steve Nunnaro (drums), John Arnott (bass) and Craig McConnel (keyboards).
