Master (1987-present): a Thrash Metal band from Moscow, Russia.

aster formed in 1987 as one of the first-generation Russian metal bands when Sergey Popov (ex-Aria; guitar), Alik Granovsky (ex-Aria; bass) and Igor Molchanov (ex-Aria; drums) had a falling out with the management of Aria. Adding Mikhail Seryshev (vocals), Andrei Bolshakov (guitar) and Kirill Pokrovsky (keyboards), Master would rise to become one of Russia's most popular metal bands with the first two albums selling some 3 million copies collectively. Indeed, those first two albums in question, Mactep - Master (1987) and S Petl'oy Na Sheye - -- With a Lee on the Neck (1988), showed the band on their rise with a speed/thrash metal sound, a sound that would soften only slightly over their career. Talk Of The Devil (1991) featured English lyrics with only Seryshev, Bolshakov, Popov and Granovsky, with Seryshev sounding much like Scorpions' Klaus Meine. On Maniac Party (1994; also in English), only Granovsky and Seryshev returned with Vyacheslav Sidorov (guitar) and Anatoly Shenderov (drums) joining them to replace the other members. Sergey Popov returned to replace Sidorov on Live (1995; live), Pesni Mertvyh - Songs of The Dead (1996) and Live II (1997; live).

Back in 1991, Seryshev also assumed the role of Jesus in the Russian version of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber before Master toured Russia with Sepultura the next year.

Granovsky would be the only remaining original member, for the line-up shifted again on Labirint Labyrinth - (Labirint - Labyrinth; 2000) to include Lex (vocals), Leonid Fomin (guitars) and Oleg Milovanov (drums) with their sound likewise changing to a lighter thrash with their "best of..." compilation following in the form of Classics 1987-2002 (2001) with Aleksei Strike replacing Fomin.

33 Zhizni - 33 lives (2004), the compilation Grand Collection (2004) and Po Tu Storonu Sna - The Other Side Of a Dream (2006) followed.

In January 2008, Alexey Strike and Alexander Karpuhin left the band. Leonid Fomin, Andrey Smirnov, and Oleg Khovrin became the band's new members.

VIII was released in 2010.

In 2011, Andrey Smirnov and Oleg Khovrin left the band. Alexander "Gips" took over the drums, while Leo Fomin remained the only guitarist.

Footnote: The album titles have been phonetically spelled out using the West-Europe/Latin alphabet (followed by English translation) because the Diskery database doesn't properly store the Russian alphabet at this time.
