U.D.O. (1987-1991, 1997-present): a Heavy Metal band from Germany.
etting back to his stylistic roots, UDO was the solo project of ex-Accept frontman vocalist Udo Dirkschneider who recruited Matthias Deith (guitar), Peter Szigeti (guitar), Frank Rittel (bass) and Tomas Franke (drums) to release his long awaited debut Animal House (1988) to acclaim. It seemed as though UDO was going to challenge Accept, and their style, at their heyday but he fell short for the subsequent albums of Mean Machine (1989; featuring Thomas S. (Real Name: Thomas Smuszynski; bass), Stefan Schwarzmann (drums)and Andy Susemihl (guitar; replacing Szigeti)), an d Faceless World (1990; now without Susemihl) came across as formulaic. But all those years of straining himself on the vocals. caught up with him for after Timebomb (1991) Udo suffered a heart attack and the band was put out of commission while he recovered, but when he did Solid (1997) was the result. This new effort also saw him recruit the entire string section of the band with only himself and Schwarzmann returning to include Jürgen Graf (guitar),Stefan Kaufmann (guitar),FittyWienhold (bass), followed by No Limits (1998), Holy (1999; with Igor Gianola replacingGrafand Lorenzo Milani replacing Schwarzmann), the live set Live In Russia (2001), Man And Machine (2002), Thunderball (2004) and Mastorcutor (2007).
