uitarists Randy Meinhard and Patrick Mameli started Pestilence in 1986 and recruited Martin Van Drunen (vocals/bass) and Marco Foddis (drums) to complete their line-up. Singing to 'Roadrunner', the act attempted to establish themselves in the fertile German thrash metal scene with their debut Mallevs Maleficarum (1988). Mainhard departed to form his own act Sacrosanct with Patrick Uterwijk recruited in time for their follow-up Consuming Impulse (1989). The album also saw the debut of Tony Choy (bass) and Kent Smith (keyboards). By this time Pestilence was gaining momentum with the death metal community but just as their notoriety was gaining influence they were served another helping of bad news with the departure of Van Drunen, who started his own outfit Asphyx. Mameli took over his duties and added new bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling to squeeze out two more albums, Testimony Of The Ancients (1991) and Spheres (1993), before they busted up in 1994. Their final act would be the "best of..." compilation titled Mind Reflections, released that same year by 'Roadrunner' posthumously.
January 2008 would end the dry spell for Pestilence when, via a press release on Blabbermouth.net, vocalist/guitarist Patrick Mameli let loose that the band was back. About a year later, Resurrection Macabre (2009) would arrive under the line-up Patrick Mameli (vocals/lead & rhythm guitar), Tony Choy (bass), Peter Wildoer (drums) and Patrick Uterwijk (lead guitar; appears in album insert but did not perform).
In October 2009, Jeroen Paul Thesseling left Obscura to re-join Pestilence after fifteen years of separation, replacing Choy. His tenure would only last until 2012 when he was replaced by Stephan Fimmers. Thesseling's tenure lasted until 2012 when he was replaced by Stephan Fimmers, while Tim Yeung ex-(Morbid Angel, Divine Heresy, All That Remains, Hate Eternal) would assume drums after the release of Doctrine (2011). Hadeon (2018) and Exitivm (2020) by which time the membership had morphed to Patrick Mameli (guitars, vocals), Septimiu Harsan (drums), Edward Negrea (bass) and Rutger van Noordenburg (guitars).
Footnote: Although they started as death metal, their albums would gradually feature more and more fusion/jazz influences.
