GENRES DATABASEPop
Pop music (a term that came from an abbreviation of "popular") is a genre of radio friendly rock and roll music which originated in the 1950s. It is important to note that the terms "popular music" and "pop music" are not exactly the same; the former is a description of music which is simply popular (high sales) and can include ANY style of music.
Pop music is generally eclectic by borrowing components from other styles. The core elements which define pop as 'Pop' include generally short-to-medium length (3-5 minute) songs, written in a basic verse-chorus structure, often incorporating repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and catchy hooks. So-called 'pure pop' music, such as 'power pop', features all these elements, with electric guitars, drums and bass. No matter the form, the main goal of Pop Music is to emphasize being pleasurable to listen to, rather than having artistic depth so it can be easily commercially recorded for a mass audience.
