Cenotaph formed in 1989 from the ashes of Damned Cross, a band who had existed for only one year (1988) to release a couple of demos, founding members Daniel Corchad (vocals), Julio Viterbo (guitar), Pala (guitar), Curro (bass) and Oscar Clorio (drums) reformed to release The Gloomy Reflection Of Our Hidden Sorrows (1992). But original vocalist Daniel Corchado left after to move on to Incantation, and then The Chasm to be replaced by Edgardo Gonzalez. But this reocrding was not, actually, their first. That would be the Tenebrous Apparitions EP in 1990 featuring Gustavo Sánchez on guitars, followed by another EP in the form of The Eternal Disgrace (1991).
Most of Cenotaph's material was rooted in old-school death metal with screeching vocals that became evident with the follow-up releases of The Gloomy Reflection of Our Hidden Sorrows (1992), Riding On Black Oceans (1994) and Epic Rites (9 Epic Tales Of Death Rites) (1996); the latter two with Julio Viterbo on guitars and Fernando Castellón Garcilazo on bass.
By the release of Saga Belica (2002) the band had returned after several years in purgatory to feature the return of Gonzalez and Clorio with all new string section of Samuel Ocadiz (guitar) and Eduardo Guevara (guitar). They disbanded in 2002 only to reform again in 2018 under the membership of Oscar Clorio (drums), César Sánchez (guitars), Edgardo González (vocals), Julio Viterbo (guitars) and Alexis Aguilar (bass; joining in 2019). A split and then two compilations in the form of Tenebrous Aeternum (2020) and Tenebrous Apparitions/The Eternal Disgrace (2022).
Footnote: A cenotaph is an empty tomb or a monument erected in honor of a person or group of people whose remains lay elsewhere or where those individual(s) have since been re-interred elsewhere. Although the vast majority of cenotaphs honor individuals, many noted cenotaphs are instead dedicated to the memories of groups of individuals, most often lost soldiers of a country or of an empire after a war.
