Cronos (1990-1997): a NWOBHM band from Newcastle, UK.
The band Cronos was formed by Cronos (the man) a.k.a. Bassist/vocalist Conrad Lant from the infamous Venom, after his departure from that band in the late eighties. With two replacement Venom guitarists in tow in the form of James Clare and Mike Hickey, along with Chris Patterson on drums, Cronos decided to pursue a more straight ahead heavy metal sound with his new band, rather than continuing the grimy thrash metal/black metal sound of his former mates. The vocals were not much different from the Venom days, but song content and style was more in the classic NWOBHM mold. The band recorded two albums with the original lineup, Dancing in the Fire (1990) and Rock 'N' Roll Disease (1993) before reverting to a trio of Cronos, Mike Hickey and new drummer Mark Wharton to record the Venom album in 1995 being a collection of previous Cronos and Venom tracks redone. Also recorded was an album entitled Triumvirate that was never released. By 1997 Cronos (the man) was back in the reformed Venom, and Cronos (the band) was officially laid to rest. Hell to the Unknown: Anthology was a posthumous compilation released in 2006.
