Stone Temple PilotsBIOGRAPHYStone Temple Pilots (1989-2002, 2008-present): a Grunge band from San Diego, California, USA. O riginally called Mighty Joe Young (and briefly Talk Show), Stone Temple Pilots featured Scott Weiland (Full Name: Scott Richard Weiland Kline; R.I.P. 1967-2015; vocals), Dean DeLeo (guitar), Robert DeLeo (bass) and Eric Kretz (drums) they relocated to San Diego and adopted the moniker Stone Temple Pilots influenced by an STP Oil Treatment sticker (rejecting the original second proposal Shirley Temple's Pussy) when they discovered the former name was already used. After a few years on the grunge/alternative farm teams, they signed to 'Atlantic' to release their debut Core (1992) and got a 3 US charting position for their troubles. Featuring tracks like Plush and Sex Type Thing they drew comparisons to Pearl Jam. After the subsequent singles were released the album finally drifted into the top 30 in the UK a full year after its initial release. Purple (1994) was a more cerebral effort that rocketed to 1 US and an even 10 in the UK, especially on the strength of Vaseline, a track that received endless radio play. But it all almost came collapsing down on them when Weiland's love of the white nose stuff almost got him a lengthy jail stint. Read All... ⏬ In 1996 their third effort came in the form of Tiny Music... Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop getting 4 US/31 UK But the narrow miss a few years ago got even narrower this year with Weiland having to cancel the band's tour obligations midway through for yet more drug related legal hassles, followed by a string of similar court issues, forcing the remaining members with Dave Coutts (ex-Ten Inch Men; vocals) to form Talk Show with a one-off same titled album in 1997, leaving Scott Weiland to produce his own solo release 12 Bar Blues (1998), a release that was not received well by fans. The band re-formed to release the aptly titled No.4 (1999) to a 6 US charting, but the English had long since moved on from that style of music and the US was not far behind. In the summer of 2001, the prediction that the music public had moved on came true when the band released its fifth album, Shangri-La Dee Da, which yielded one modest hit, Days of the Week. Despite a promotion tour with Linkin Park and Godsmack on that year's Family Values Tour, the album proved to be commercial disappointment. Reportedly, the label then withdrew much of its support, and the band decided to put a hold on any future albums. The band did manage to record All in the Suit That You Wear, a song intended to be the lead single on the soundtrack for the 2002 film Spider-Man, but Chad Kroeger's song Hero ended off being chosen as the lead single. Apparently Dean DeLeo and Weiland had an altercation after the last show of the band's fall 2002 tour and the group then dissolved. Weiland was soon later recruited to join the supergroup Velvet Revolver with Guns N' Roses members Slash (guitar), Matt Sorum (drums), and Duff McKagan (bass) and ex-Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner to produce two albums before Weiland was fired in 2008. The DeLeo brothers formed the supergroup Army of Anyone with Richard Patrick (vocals; of Filter) and session drummer Ray Luzier to release a one-off self-titled before going on indefinite hiatus in 2007. Eric Kretz opened his own studio, Bomb Shelter Studios, and drummed for Spiralarms. A month after Weiland's departure from Velvet Revolver, by no coincidence, Stone Temple Pilots announced they were reuniting for a 65-date North American tour. The act followed this up with regular touring until they took a break after releasing their self-titled sixth album in 2010 that debuted at 2 on the Billboard 200. They resumed touring a year later. In 2012, the band began to experience problems again. On September 17, at a show in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada the band arrived nearly two hours late, and cut their set 30 minutes short. The following day, the band released a brief statement announcing that the next show show in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada was cancelled due to Weiland being ordered to go on "48 hours complete vocal rest due to strained vocal cords". Maybe, but on February 27, 2013, Stone Temple Pilots properly fired Weiland. Both the remaining band and Weiland issued lawsuits over the right to perform with the Stone Temple Pilots name; both were settled out of court, the DeLeo brothers and Kretz maintained the rights. In 2013, over successive live performances, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park was featured as guest vocalist. This role would become a regular event until 2015 when he announced he would no longer be performing with Stone Temple Pilots to concentrate on Linkin Park. On December 3, 2015, Scott Weiland was found dead on his tour bus in Minnesota. 2018 would see Stone Temple Pilots release their second eponymous album under the membership of Jeff Gutt (lead vocals/backing vocals), Dean DeLeo (guitar/production), Robert DeLeo (bass/backing vocals/production) and Eric Kretz (drums/percussion). This would be followed by Perdida (2020). Read Less... ⏫
