ThanatosBIOGRAPHYThanatos (1984-1992, 1999-2022): a Death Metal band from Rotterdam, Netherlands. O ne of the the Netherlands' oldest death metal bands, if not its most prolific, Thanatos formed in 1984 as Whiplash before quickly changing their name and enjoying considerable underground popularity in the late eighties. Although their first two albums were critically acclaimed, a spate of cancelled tours coupled with poor label promotion forced the band to disband in 1992 due to poor sales. It would be seven years later that guitarist/vocalist Stephan Gebédi would put a new version of the band together. Starting with the line-up of Stephan Gebédi (vocals/guitars), Remo van Arnhem (drums), Ed Boeser (bass) and Erwin de Brouwer (guitars (lead)), Thanatos would debut with Emerging from the Netherworlds (1990) to be followed with Realm of Ecstacy (1992) before a slight membership change on Angelic Encounters (2000) featuring Aad Kloosterwaard on drums. A further change would occur in 2002 with the release of the Beyond Terror EP to boast Marco de Bruin (bass) and Yuri Rinkel (drums) amongst its members. Undead. Unholy. Divine. (2004), The Burning of Sodom / ... and Jesus Wept (EP; 2006), Justified Genocide (2009), Global Purification (2014) followed until the Blind Obedience / Thanatos EP (2019) whereby Martin Ooms (drums) stepped in. Mous Mirer took bass on the act's final studio full-length, Violent Death Rituals (2020).
