Amon AmarthBIOGRAPHYAmon Amarth (1992-present): a Death Metal band from Stockholm, Sweden. O riginally starting out under the name Scum, an act founded in 1988 by Paul "Themgoroth" Mäkitalo (Dark Funeral) on vocals, Olavi Mikkonen on lead guitar, Petri Tarvainen (ex-Eternal Oath) on bass and Vesa Meriläinen on rhythm guitar who released only a single demo in the form of Demo 1 in 1992. Amon Amarth would open shop in 1992 with the demo, The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter, arriving two years later, followed by the EP, Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds (1996) under the membership of Johan Hegg (vocals), Olavi Mikkonen (guitars), Anders Hansson (guitars), Ted Lundström (bass) and Niko Kaukinen (drums). The band took its name from the Sindarin name of Mount Doom, a volcano in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. Their lyrics mostly deal with Viking mythology and history, and so they have been sometimes erroneously labeled "Viking metal", although the band insists they play melodic death metal. The first line-up change happened with Martin Lopez taking over drums on Once Sent from the Golden Hall (1998). Fredrik Andersson took drums, while Johan Söderberg assumed guitars from Hansson who quit to join Opeth for the The Avenger (1999), The Crusher (2001), Versus the World (2002), Fate of Norns / The Beast Split (split; 2004), Fate of Norns Release Shows (split; 2004), Fate of Norns (2004), Rrroooaaarrr (split; 2005), With Oden on Our Side (2006), Twilight of the Thunder God (2008), The Re-Issues (boxed set; 2009), Hymns to the Rising Sun (compilation; 2010), Surtur Rising (2011), Under the Influence (EP; 2013), Deceiver of the Gods (2013) and the Jomsviking (2016) releases; the latter featuring Tobias Gustafsson (ex-Vomitory) who was present temporarily on drums to complete the recording. Interesting to note that Johan Bergebäck (formerly of Nifelheim) and Steve Drennan briefly assumed guitars and bass respectively in the past. Read Less... ⏫
