TankBIOGRAPHYTank (1980-1989, 1997-2007, 2007-2023): a NWOBHM band from London, England, UK. E nglish band Tank is the name of two British heavy metal bands, both of which stem from a band formed in 1980 by Algy Ward, a former member of The Damned. The original band is known as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement (NWOBHM). Tank was often compared to Motorhead as both bands were trios fronted by singing bassists, and played a loose, almost punk-styled heavy metal music with colorful lyrics. After legal and creative disputes, Ward led one version of the group while guitarists Mick Tucker and Cliff Evans led the other. Their 1982 debut album, Filth Hounds of Hades under the line-up of Algy Ward (R.I.P. 2023; vocals/bass), Peter Brabbs (guitars) and Mark Brabbs (drums), was positively received by both punk and heavy metal fans as well as most critics, regarded now as one of the best albums of the NWOBHM movement. As was the case with many bands of the era, Tank was never able to build on the promise shown by their debut. They continued on through lineup changes and waning commercial fortunes before finally disbanding in 1989 after recording Power of the Hunter (1982), This Means War (1983; where Mick Tucker joined on guitars), Honour and Blood (1984; with the all re-started line-up of Ward along side Mick Tucker (guitars), Cliff Evans (guitars) and Graeme "Crash" Crallan (R.I.P. 2008; drums)) and Tank (1987; featuring Gary Taylor on drums). A new album, Still at War, emerged in 2002 under the membership of Ward with Evans (guitars) and Tucker (guitars) with Bruce Bisland assuming drums. In August 2006, Ward reported that he was putting the finishing touches on the demos for the next Tank album, Sturmpanzer but, as things would progress, this album would be delayed because on 20 December 2008, a new lineup was announced which would not include Ward as he and Evans were no longer on artistic terms. Guitarists Mick Tucker and Cliff Evans were joined by original drummer Mark Brabbs and former Bruce Dickinson bassist Chris Dale. Ward was replaced by former Rainbow singer Doogie White. For 2010, the band replaced Brabbs with Voodoo Six drummer, Dave Cavill and released the new Tank album War Machine (2010) but under the name Tucker-Evans Tank due to disputes over the name Tank. In 2013, it emerged that Algy Ward resurrected his own version of the band now dubbed Algy Ward's Tank, with all tracks on a new album called Breath of the Pit (2013) being "written, played and shouted" by Ward himself. Sturmpanzer finally arrived in 2018, however no further albums would be recorded as Ward would die in 2023, leaving Tucker-Evans Tank as the only surviving version.
