A

merican rock band Filter formed in 1993 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Richard Patrick (vocals) and Brian Liesegang (guitar/programming). The band formed when Patrick started his own band after being touring guitarist for Nine Inch Nails. Their debut, Short Bus (1995), ended off going platinum, largely due to the success of the single Hey Man Nice Shot. But after the album, the band would go through the first of many lineup changes, leaving Patrick as the only consistent member.

After Liesegang's departure in 1997, Patrick recorded a follow up album with the Short Bus touring band members of Matt Walker (drums), Geno Lenardo (lead guitar), Frank Cavanagh (bass/backing vocals), and later Steve Gillis (drums after 1999), who became full-time members thereafter. The resulting effort, 1999's Title of Record, also went platinum driven by the success of the track Take a Picture. The third album, The Amalgamut (2002) followed but with sagging sales.

Patrick then checked into rehab after years of heavy alcohol and drug abuse just as touring for the album The Amalgamut had begun; this most likely contributed to the album's aforementioned sagging sales. The band soon after went into hiatus while he was in rehab. When he came out he then formed Army of Anyone to release one self-titled album, only to return to Filter after Army of Anyone went into hiatus itself. On return, he would contribute to release of Anthems for the Damned (2008), a set of track remixes called Remixes for the Damned (2008), The Trouble with Angels (2010) and The Sun Comes Out Tonight (2013) with a revolving door of different musicians including Mitchell Marlow (lead guitar), John Spiker (bass), Mika Fineo (drums), Rob Patterson (lead guitar), Phil Buckman (bass/backing vocals), Elias Mallin (drums), Jeff Fabb (drums), Tim Kelleher (bass), Oumi Kapila (lead guitar), Chris Reeve (drums) and Ashley Dzerigian (bass).
