Yggdrasil

Biography

Yggdrasil (2001-present): a Folk Metal band from Skåne, Sweden.

A

t the close of 2000 Magnus Wohlfart (vocals/guitars) and Gustaf Hagel (bass/backing vocals) formed a project combining the dark and mysterious atmosphere of traditional Scandinavian folk music with the force of metal.

After Jeremy Child (drums) joined Yggdrasil set about releasing two demos, Kvällning (2002) and I nordens rike (2003) before they recorded their debut proper, Kvällningsvindar Ã-ver Nordrönt Land (Translation: Evening Winds Over Northern Lands; 2005), released on the German label 'Det Germanske Folket' in late 2007.

In 2009 the follow-up, Vedergällning (Translation: Vengeance), arrived. Later that year, Yggdrasil was featured on stage at Germany's Ragnarök Festival. Swedish label 'Grand Master Music' licensed their first two albums for first release in digital format.

Following a split with the German label, the band focused on the next album, Irrbloss (Translation: Will-o-wisps). The album was completed in April of 2011, along with their previous albums as full deal with 'Grand Master Music'. By this time, however, the membership had shifted withJacob Blecher (drums) and Benny Olsson (guitars/backing vocals). In 2012 the second backing vocals position would become vacant again to be filled by Zarathustra.

Footnote: Yggdrasil is the Norse 'Tree of Life', a mythological Ash tree that holds the nine 'realms' of existence by which humans occupy the center one and the Gods are at the top in 'Asgard' (naturally).
