Myrk began in 1997, with some songs that had been written to create a band but for various reasons a solid line-up could not be held, and as a result they never played any gigs. But in early 2000 this all changed when Skog and Icortus (both ex-Mictian) joined the founding member Storm as guitarist. That incarnation lasted for about 6-7months after a disagreement between Myrkur and Icortus. The music was nonetheless displayed for the rest of the members and they liked the sound so they decided to continue on as Myrk.
Gaddur joined the band as a second guitarist in late 2002 by the time they had already recorded two demos, most notably The Spell (2002) under the line-up of Myrkur (guitar), Skog (drums), Storm (bass), Icortus (vocals) and Maddi (bass for sessions) and had become active in playing gigs in Iceland. In the spring of 2003 they recorded their second CD Icons Of The Dark at a friend's home studio, a recording that they were never happy with the sound, but by the summer, Gaddur decided to move to a different part of the country so they got friend Abhzar to become the second guitarist for gigs. All was going great for the band until in November when those old disagreements returned when Myrkur and Icortus got into a personal disagreement regarding the band and he quit and soon after the rest of the guys leaving the band too, leaving just Myrkur (guitar) and Gaddur (guitar) to continue on.
