Cancer (1987-1996, 2003-2006, 2013-present): a Death Metal band from Telford, Shropshire, UK.

F

ounded by John Walker (vocals/guitar), Ian Buchanan (bass) and Carl Stokes (drums) originally as a derivative Death metal band they debuted in 1990 with To The Glory End, an album morbidity as direct as their name. The act was first seen in 1988 at the Tontine pub in Ironbridge, UK But after adding James Murphy (ex-Obituary/ex-Death; guitar), the group expanded their musical endeavors on their second release Death Shall Rise (1992), recorded in the capitol of Death metal, Florida, USA., before Barry "Baz" Savage replaced Murphy on guitar after the subsequent tours of Europe and America:their second tour over-all - the first was with Obituary and Deicide.

In 1993 they then launched their next album The Sins of Mankind, an album that finally saw them breaking away from the mold and forming their own sound. Murphy left due to the complications of performing with a British band on an American passport. Shortly after, 'East West' came calling and furnished them with a worldwide deal, the first for those in their genre with Black Faith (1995) following shortly later now off the 'Vinyl Solution' label and on 'East West' and sounding more like Metallica than their influences of old, even if their rendition of Deep Purple's Space Truckin' most likely failed to impress many. The band split shortly after due to their dislike of the music industry as a whole.

In the downtime, Stokes became a drum teacher, eventually ending up playing in local band Assert. Walkerbusked around, playing solo acoustic sets, and also taught guitar. Buchanan engaged in his own music project called Hairy Scary Man.

In late 2003, Walker and Stokes got together again with the idea of reforming the act. Buchanan was not interested in rejoining, but blessed the reformation nonetheless. The band recruited Assert bass-player Adam Richardson, and Asatru's Rob Engvikson as lead guitarist. The three original members (Walker, Stokes and Buchanan) had known Engviksonfor many years, both as a fan and friend, he also played guitar in a band called Nothing But Contempt with Stokes, and Barney Greenway (of Napalm Death). The new line-up recorded a new EP called Corporation$ in 2004.

Cancer reformed again in 2013 to promote their first three albums that would be re-released by 'Cyclone Empire' in 2014 under the membership of Ian Buchanan (bass), Carl Stokes (drums/backing vocals (track 3)) and John Walker (guitars/vocals). This line-up would also release Shadow Gripped (2018).
